That’s Christine © David Roth
* Song for Christine Lavin
I got a little place in 1980
Sixth Avenue and 12th Street, in my new town
One Monday night I took a stroll
I heard some music, oh, my soul
And that’s the night my whole life turned around
My footsteps took me down to Greenwich Village
And through a looking glass a vision came
A bunch of people taking turns with voices and guitars
And I knew that I would never be the same
As I came to be acquainted with these writers and their songs
I thought maybe I could write some of my own
There was Jack and Rod and Paul and Frank
Suzanne, RuthAnne, and Brian and Cliff
David, Hugh, and Lucy, Josh, and Shawn
Too many more to name here, and you know who you are
But one stood out, a real living doll
She would have us think that we were ready for the big time
By the way that she would cheer-lead for us all
Generous and kind and smart
That would be your friend and mine, Christine
When Julie Gold came up with “From a Distance”
Chris was taking tapes all over town
Nancy Griffith saw the light and then the tune took off
And Bette Midler won a Grammy with that song
The first time Christine played at Gracie Mansion
She called me up the next day all abuzz
She said that Mayor Ed loved folk musicians
And I got to play that gig two times because
She took guitar from Dave Van Ronk
She got me right between the eyes
When she wrote about those “New Age Guys”
No one has the kind of mind
And just as if that weren’t enough
She twirls batons and other stuff
Like folding napkins, knitting, doing nails
Generous and kind and smart
That would be your friend and mine
This was a transformational time in my life and set me on a course
I never imagined. I return to the Village early next month for the
6th annual Village Trip Festival and their first-ever kids program;
If you're in or around, come to the family concert on Sunday 9/12 @ 2-3 PM at the Jefferson Market Library ~ 425 6th Avenue, NYC
We'll present our new works from the day before and who knows
what else! The event is free but pre-registration
(due to space limitation) is requested here:
And if you're on or near Provincetown, MA (the tip of Cape Cod), I'll be part of a couple of "Porch Concerts" at 6 PM on
at the new and perfect home of the Cape Cod Songwriters Retreats,
the Brasswood Inn. The first one is my concert hour (I'm hoping to be joined by Brian and or Tom on marimba and/or drums/trumpet)...the second one (also an hour) will feature some of the attendees of our retreats from this past January and March in a round-robin format! Think "variety", "heart", and "courage"!
We're hoping for good weather, cuz the audience watches from below on Commercial Street!
It's wonder-full for musicians to be looked UP to.
See you somewhere. Maybe a neighborhood near you!
