Hi friends. Meet Ruby Bridges.
On November 14th, 1960 ~ sixty years ago, federal marshals escorted her past angry, threatening crowds and up the steps of the all-white William Frantz Elementary School in New Orleans.
Bridges was one of the first Black students to integrate public schools after the Supreme Court's landmark ruling in Brown versus Board of Education. The image of a young Bridges walking in front of hate speech scrawled on a wall became iconic in Norman Rockwell's painting "The Problem We All Live With". This painting appeared in the January 14, 1964 edition of LOOK Magazine, after Rockwell departed the Saturday Evening Post (where he'd done 363 covers over the years). The Post didn't want him to depict people of color in anything other than service industry jobs so he found a home @ LOOK where this aspect of his work was welcomed (and he gained more critical acceptance of his work by doing so).
When Rockwell passed in 1978 (I read about it in the Anchorage Daily News during my time living in Alaska), the song "Norman's Way" came into being which you can hear on my 2015 Stockfisch album "Will You Come Home".
This original painting was displayed outside the Oval Office in 2011 during Barack Obama's first term as President.
