April greetings friends...my monthly concert hours happens in two weeks, and we'll honor the Earth (and other things) on this night. The evening is jointly sponsored by the Anacortes and Mount Vernon Centers for Spiritual Living, both vibrant communities in my former home of Washington State.
The first Earth Day was in 1970, so here we are a half-century later and still in need of reminder to be better stewards of our only planet.
Years ago when I lived in Seattle I became friends with a man named Mark Dubois. Mark began as an environmental activist, initially focusing on saving rivers and has worked to mobilize and engage citizens globally for a more sustainable future. In 1972 he co-founded Environmental Traveling Companions (E.T.C.) to offer environmental education and Outward Bound-type trips to disabled persons and disadvantaged youth. In 1973, he co-founded Friends of the River to fight the flooding of the Stanislaus River and canyon by the New Melones Dam. He reached national fame when he chained himself to a rock on the banks of the river to prevent the flooding of the river. He also co-founded International Rivers in 1984, and served as the International Coordinator of Earth Day 1990 and 2000.

Mark heard a song I wrote in 1981 ~ Earth ~ and asked my permission to use it as a theme song for his International Earth Day activities. I also got to sing this at the 40th Anniversary of the United Nations in New York City in 1985.

All 30 of us went as scheduled last August, with every hygiene and safety precaution in place, and it was utterly glorious. We paddle again, with 6 guides, 3 generous (and healthy) meals (all diets can be accommodated) a day, the most beautiful campsites in the world, and music by firelight each night. All levels, kids and grandkids welcomed (we may write songs too)...
